no, that isn’t my hand. calm down.
I’m going to get a tattoo this week. it won’t be on my hand, but a Philly tattoo has to happen before I leave. I could care less how stupid anyone thinks it is, this exchange has been one of the best experiences of my life and I love this city and all of the people I’ve met here so much.

for the people who know me really well, my semi-secret life long love of dance is nothing new, but it is something i haven’t brought up on my Tumblr before.

one of my friends here in Philly is named Jon Priester and he made this really amazing piece for his senior choreography. he’s fairly shy and hasn’t shown it to anyone, the only reason i got to see it was because i wasn’t in town for the performance. i’m pretty sure he hasn’t shown any of his friends or anything because the video only had 14 plays when i watched it.

I think you should all watch this. it is really incredible.

So I got an email last night and the first part of it looked like this:
Hello Matt!
First of all, thank you for forwarding a selection of your works to be considered by the curatorial committee for Art With Heart in support of Toronto’s Casey House. I’m happy to report that the committee has selected This Changes Everything for inclusion in the auction’s select Emerging Artist section.
Artist: Matt MorelandTitle: This Changes EverythingDate: 2011Medium: Digital C-PrintSize: 20 x 20
So that means that I’m going to be in one of the biggest Canadian art auctions this summer in the emerging artist category. This is kind of a huge deal because the curators for the auction are a bunch of huge names within the Toronto art community. I am so excited for this!
I’m also really glad that Vanessa talked me into submitting my work when I originally considered not submitting. I was so nervous and the idea of having my early work shown to a bunch of important curators sounded so terrifying.
So big thanks to Vanessa, you rule!
The best part is, I already have this piece framed from one of the exhibitions I just had in Philly.
This is all so great! I’m so excited for everything that’s coming over the next few months!

I just came across this again after at least a year. I remember watching it probably 10-15 times the first time I found it. So eerie, so good.

Art Auction

  • J: "you should meet Matt"
  • S: "oh yeah, the guy from Canada?"
  • Finding out that people you look up to in the art community know who you are when you've never met them is the best feeling in the world.

A smaller little note about my trip to New York. I went to see the Francesca Woodman show at the Guggenheim. It was her life’s work and since she died at 22, it was only about 6 years of work. The crazy part was how much work there was. probably a solid 8-10 bodies of work, cohesive, incredible, beautiful bodies of work. About 3/4s of the way through the exhibition (which was probably around 100 images) you get to her Thesis work. Just the idea that all of the work in the show before that wall was done before she even graduated from college. I don’t even know how to describe how amazed I was.
If anyone gets a chance, you need to see that show.
p.s. there’s a link to the show’s page on the Guggenheim’s website in the click-through link.

So I’ve been asked to put together a portfolio that will be presented to the Art With Heart curatorial committee.

This is kind of the scariest but most amazing thing that has happened to me. If you’ve watched the video above, you’ll see that works are sold for thousands of dollars at this auction and I’ve been told that the event is the biggest charity auction in Canada. This doesn’t mean my work will be in the auction, it means I need to put together a collection of work that they would look at, hopefully find somthing they like and maaaaaybe, in an ideal world, choose one of the pieces for the auction.

SO, the reason I am posting this is so I can ask you guys to help me figure out what work I should put in the presentation portfolio that will be sent to the curatorial committee.

Please go here: www.mattmoreland.com and then PM or respond to this post with which photos you think might have a good shot at getting accepted for auction.

THIS IS SOMETHING THAT COULD LAUNCH MY CAREER AND I’M FREAKING OUT SO I NEED YOUR HELP!
