M. Hunt
Aperture Foundation

I got an academic award at UArts in Philly even though I’m only an exchange student. The award is also usually given to a graduating student. When I found out that I had won (let alone was even eligible) I was so surprised, so amazed and so happy. At the same time though, I felt terrible for getting an award that I didn’t feel I should be allowed to receive.

I originally figured it would be a grant/bursary/scholarship kind of thing and since I only pay $6000 a year for tuition while my friends all pay $30 000+, I really felt like I shouldn’t be getting anything. Luckily, my award wasn’t an amount of money or grant or anything like that.

The award that I won was called “The Critical Inquiry In Photography Award”. It’s given to the student who is the most involved in art criticism and curatorial studies. The great part about this award is that the prize has always been a book of essays on photography. The even better part of this award is that one of my professors had seen a better book that he figured pertained to my practice more so they got me a giant anthology instead.

The book is called “The Unseen Eye” and there must have been someone who spent hours studying my brain just so they could know every single photograph that could possibly interest me throughout photographic history. The book is so amazing and I really want to send a big internet THANKS to my professor Jordan Rockford who nominated me for the award and found this incredible book for me.

My time in Philadelphia has been so incredible and I have so many amazing people to thank for it, but for now, just Jordan. He helped me organize and workshop proposals for galleries, got me an internship, showed me the local galleries and even planned me a surprise going away party (more info and pictures are to follow). He has been a great mentor, an incredible role model and a phenomenal friend. So thanks Jordan, even though you’ll probably never get to read this (because I don’t really show people this tumblr) you’ve had an amazing influence on my life and helped me so much over the past 4 months.

for the people who know me really well, my semi-secret life long...

for the people who know me really well, my semi-secret life long love of dance is nothing new, but it is something i haven’t brought up on my Tumblr before.

one of my friends here in Philly is named Jon Priester and he made this really amazing piece for his senior choreography. he’s fairly shy and hasn’t shown it to anyone, the only reason i got to see it was because i wasn’t in town for the performance. i’m pretty sure he hasn’t shown any of his friends or anything because the video only had 14 plays when i watched it.

I think you should all watch this. it is really incredible.

So I got an email last night and the first part of it looked...

So I got an email last night and the first part of it looked like this:

Hello Matt!

First of all, thank you for forwarding a selection of your works to be considered by the curatorial committee for Art With Heart in support of Toronto’s Casey House. I’m happy to report that the committee has selected This Changes Everything for inclusion in the auction’s select Emerging Artist section.

Artist: Matt Moreland
Title: This Changes Everything
Date: 2011
Medium: Digital C-Print
Size: 20 x 20

So that means that I’m going to be in one of the biggest Canadian art auctions this summer in the emerging artist category. This is kind of a huge deal because the curators for the auction are a bunch of huge names within the Toronto art community. I am so excited for this!

I’m also really glad that Vanessa talked me into submitting my work when I originally considered not submitting. I was so nervous and the idea of having my early work shown to a bunch of important curators sounded so terrifying.

So big thanks to Vanessa, you rule!

The best part is, I already have this piece framed from one of the exhibitions I just had in Philly.

This is all so great! I’m so excited for everything that’s coming over the next few months!

Hey guys!

I went to see...

A smaller little note about my trip to New York. I went to see the Francesca Woodman show at the Guggenheim. It was her life’s work and since she died at 22, it was only about 6 years of work. The crazy part was how much work there was. probably a solid 8-10 bodies of work, cohesive, incredible, beautiful bodies of work. About 3/4s of the way through the exhibition (which was probably around 100 images) you get to her Thesis work. Just the idea that all of the work in the show before that wall was done before she even graduated from college. I don’t even know how to describe how amazed I was.

If anyone gets a chance, you need to see that show.

p.s. there’s a link to the show’s page on the Guggenheim’s website in the click-through link.

AIPAD

I was in New York a few weekends ago with some friends from school for the AIPAD photoshow (The Association of International Photography Art Dealers) and it was the best!

It was at the park avenue armory (which is a beautiful building) and I saw some really incredible work. Since it’s mostly for art dealers/collectors, it’s a lot of old, super expensive work that you only ever get to see in an art history slide show. It was really amazing actually being able to see prints that were made by all of the people who are responsible for what contemporary photography is today.

I saw Ansel Adams’ work (which is surprisingly only maybe 16x20, I figured they’d be HUGE), Laura Letinsky, Irving Penn, Wee Gee (a lot of him because his works being shown at ICP right now), Francesca Woodman (again, lots because her work is at the Guggenheim… more info on that in another post), Steve McCurry (the famous girl in the headscarf with the green eyes from national geographic, I had no idea what the photographer’s name was before this), but there was 3 things I saw that really stood out. they were more than just photos that I remembered from slides or textbooks, they were kind of important.

First of all, I got to see Henry Fox Talbot’s prints. Some of the oldest photographic prints still in existence were on display and just being able to look at the beginning of the medium was incredible. The prints were in a booth that had daguerreotypes too. It was like a photo time machine (for rich people) and it was quite the humbling experience. Made my top 3 booths, rolling in at number 3.

Second, there was a booth for a gallery out of germany called f5.6 which was awesome. They had a bunch of prints by an artist named Juliane Eirich and also a proof copy of a new book that she’s coming out with called Korea Diary. The photos in the book are all taken from the 18 months she spent in Korea. She kept a photo diary of the places she went, the weird things she saw and her day to day activities. The book was fantastic but it was also really cool just being able to see a photo book that isn’t even released yet. This was my 2nd favourite booth.

Finally, my favourite booth. I was walking with one of my professors named Jordan (who also stayed in New York over the weekend and met up with us at a few of the galleries we went to) and we were talking about some of the work we had just looked at. As we turned a corner, I saw something that I a) never thought I’d see in real life and b) never would have thought would be at AIPAD (since it’s mostly historical and very rarely contemporary work). There was an entire booth dedicated to Phillip Lorca Dicorcia and it was amazing. there was one of his photos from Heads, some of his more recent fashion-ish/portraits of women, and a little nook around a corner that had small still lives and polaroids that I had no idea even existed. The polaroids were my favourite for sure. Seeing a bunch of famous work was great but seeing work by a person who has directly influenced what you make/how you work/what you like, it was the best experience I’ve had viewing art so far in my life.

It was a really great experience and i just had to get it all out.

If you’ve gotten this far, thanks for reading.

So I’ve been asked to put together a portfolio that will...

So I’ve been asked to put together a portfolio that will be presented to the Art With Heart curatorial committee.

This is kind of the scariest but most amazing thing that has happened to me. If you’ve watched the video above, you’ll see that works are sold for thousands of dollars at this auction and I’ve been told that the event is the biggest charity auction in Canada. This doesn’t mean my work will be in the auction, it means I need to put together a collection of work that they would look at, hopefully find somthing they like and maaaaaybe, in an ideal world, choose one of the pieces for the auction.

SO, the reason I am posting this is so I can ask you guys to help me figure out what work I should put in the presentation portfolio that will be sent to the curatorial committee.

Please go here: www.mattmoreland.com and then PM or respond to this post with which photos you think might have a good shot at getting accepted for auction.

THIS IS SOMETHING THAT COULD LAUNCH MY CAREER AND I’M FREAKING OUT SO I NEED YOUR HELP!

today we were talking about how Avedon would light his photos...

today we were talking about how Avedon would light his photos and how he would have to process his film to get the high contrast aesthetic that he’s known for. my professor explained how he’d push process a stop or two when he’s developing. since i’ve only worked with colour up until this year, push processing colour film usually makes the colours look kind of wonky so i just said “what would it look like if it was in colour?”

so my assignment that i need to hand in for the first monday back from spring break is a colour remake of an avedon photo.

i’m done with asking questions.

put up stuff from the dying breed show

i’m not going to simply because you told me instead of asking me. also because you posting this anonymously makes me annoyed.

What I learned from it: it’s way too big.

Next pieces will probably be half the size. I’m also thinking about mixing the knife carving stuff I started over christmas to make objects, then painting them and relief carving them. So next to make, smaller pieces, some 2D patterns and some 3D objects!

Wood Carving pattern test block
